Sree Vellarangara Bhagavathi Temple.
Payyanur is a sacred region, both as the fertile land of ancient myths, histories and cultures as well asa land bestowed with the divine presence of the Perumal, Sri Subrahmanya Swami. Thayineri Sri Vellarangara Bhagavathi is situated in the heart of Payyanur, less than a kilometers from the old bus stand, near BKM hospital, and adjacent to the bypass raod. It in believed that the arooda sthanam of this ancient temple is the laterit stone kusham, in the vicinity of Madayi Thiruvarkkattu Bhagavathi temple. The srtisan community, the makers of temple arifacts including thr deity ornaments of Madayikkavu, lived here with their traditional rituals and aucestral vocation. It is believed that there was a family temple too for the purpose of worship. It is considered that it was during Tipu’s invasion that the temple got destroyed and ths deity as well as related tools got abandoned in the temple well. Then the ancestors of the sculptors came to Thayineri desham and settled there engaging themselves in their traditional occupation. As years passed, as part of of making the temple suitable for worship a devaprashna chintha was undertaken. It was revealed that while trying to trace the old well in the arooda sthanam, a stone from top fell in the well. It is said that the water welled up with the sound of Omkara. This was deemed a divine intervention the following prashnachintha, concluding tha that is was the dive presence of the goddess, which the ancestors used to worship in Madayikkavu, and that the name Vellarangara Bhagavathi evolved from the phrase ”Vellam karayolam uyarunna” which means ”water that rose to the suface of the earth”. Thus the temple was constructed in Thayineri, installing all the gods and goddess who were worshiped in the aarooda sthanam in the new abode, performing the required rituals. This has been the practice for many centuries now. In the recently, reconstructed temple precincts, along with Madayikkavilamma Sri Vellarangara Bhagavathi the one who annihilated Darikasura, the god of worship of pancha shilpis and the son of Aruna and Devendra, Bai and Puthurvadi Kannikkorumakan, the shakthi swaroopam born as the brave son, reside in the left palliyara (the sacrosanct chamber). THe palliyara also houses Chamundi, Vishnumoorthi and Angakkulangara Bhagavathi. In the main palliyara, facing west, there is Kali Kundor Chamundi, whos came vont from the copper vessels of Kandora Thanthri, Kurathiyamma, embodied with the essence of Parvathy in an alcove. Nearby, and just behind, there is the embodiment of Puthiya Bhagavathi, the destroyer of disease and disaster. Outside the temple wall, towards the south is the abode of Gulikan, born from the toe of Paramashivan. A Naga sthanam is installed nearby Enthusiastic works regarding the organization of a Kaliyattam from 30 Dec. 2016 to 2 Jan. 2017 have already been initiated.
